How to Get Your Brand Cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity

Getting cited by an AI engine isn’t luck. Models like ChatGPT and Perplexity have preferences about which sources they trust and quote — and you can optimize for them. Here’s the practical checklist we use at Ambeltek.

1. Make your entity unmistakable

Before a model can cite you, it has to know who you are. Nail the basics:

  • A clear, consistent brand name and description across your site and the web.
  • Organization / ProfessionalService structured data on your homepage.
  • Consistent details (name, location, services) everywhere you appear.

2. Write answer-first content

AI engines lift direct answers. Lead with the answer, then explain:

Q: What is GEO? GEO is the practice of optimizing your brand so AI engines understand and cite it. (Then elaborate.)

Use clear headings that match real questions, and keep key facts easy to extract.

3. Cite your own sources

Models trust content that is verifiable. Back claims with data, name your sources, and keep information current. Vague, unsourced marketing copy rarely gets quoted.

4. Earn third-party mentions

AI engines synthesize across the whole web, not just your site. Mentions on reputable third-party sites, directories, and publications reinforce that you’re a real, credible entity worth citing.

5. Cover the whole topic

Depth signals authority. A cluster of well-linked pages that thoroughly covers your subject beats a single thin page — both for ranking and for being seen as the source on a topic.

6. Measure and iterate

Finally, track it. Ask the major models the questions your customers ask and see whether you show up, how you’re described, and who’s cited instead. Then close the gaps.

That’s the loop: be understood, be quotable, be verifiable, be everywhere that matters — then measure. Do it consistently and you move from “not mentioned” to “frequently cited.”

On the crawler-facing side, there’s also a newer file worth knowing about — we cover llms.txt specifically here, including whether the major engines actually read it yet.
