Google AI Mode: How It Works and How to Show Up In It

AI Mode is Google’s conversational search surface, built on Gemini. It replaces the ranked list of links with a written answer, supporting citations, and an expectation that you will keep asking follow-up questions. Showing up in it is less about ranking one page for one keyword and more about being a source the system can assemble answers from.

AI Mode is not AI Overviews

The two get conflated constantly, and the difference changes what you optimize for.

AI Overviews still sit inside the familiar search page, so classic ranking pulls a lot of weight there. AI Mode removes the list entirely. When the answer is the whole page, being source number seven in a summary is a materially different outcome than being result number seven in a list.

The zero-click consequences are sharper too. Semrush measured a ~93% zero-click rate for AI Mode across 69M US desktop sessions, though that is an informational-query average and transactional queries still sent roughly 69% of clicks through. Query fan-out is the mechanism that matters

The single most important thing to understand about AI Mode is that it does not search for what the user typed. It decomposes the question into many sub-queries, runs them in parallel, and synthesizes the results. Google calls this query fan-out.

An AirOps analysis of 548,534 retrieved pages across 15,000 prompts, reported by Search Engine Land in March 2026, put numbers on how aggressive this is in practice:

  • 89.6% of prompts triggered two or more follow-up searches.
  • 15,000 original prompts expanded into 43,233 actual queries.
  • 32.9% of cited pages appeared only in fan-out results, never in the original query.
  • 95% of fan-out queries had zero traditional search volume.

That last figure deserves a moment. Almost none of the queries actually deciding your visibility exist in a keyword tool. You cannot target them directly, and a volume-first content plan will systematically miss them. What you can do is cover a topic thoroughly enough that whichever sub-question the system invents, you have already answered it. This is why topic clusters built for AI citation outperform lists of individually optimized keyword pages.

Ranking still matters, but it is a floor, not a finish line

Fan-out does not mean classic SEO stopped counting. In the same dataset, 55.8% of cited pages ranked in Google’s top 20, and pages at position 1 were cited about 3.5x more often than pages outside the top 20.

Read that as a two-stage gate. Ranking well makes you eligible to be retrieved. Something else decides whether you get quoted. Across that study, only 15% of retrieved pages made it into a final answer, which we unpack in retrieval vs citation.

How to show up in AI Mode

1. Be crawlable and renderable without JavaScript

Fan-out is fast and parallel. Anything that slows or blocks a fetch reduces your odds of being in the candidate pool at all. Server-render your content and confirm what bots actually receive; our guide to JavaScript rendering and AI crawlers covers how to test this properly.

2. Answer the sub-questions, not just the headline query

For every commercial page you care about, list the follow-ups a real buyer would ask next: what it costs, how long it takes, what it compares to, who it is wrong for. Those are the fan-out queries. Answer each in a clearly headed, self-contained passage.

3. Write passages a model can lift cleanly

AI Mode quotes fragments, not pages. A paragraph that only makes sense after reading the three above it is hard to cite. Our guide to content chunking for AI retrieval covers the structural side of this.

4. Make your entity unambiguous

AI Mode grounds answers partly in Google’s understanding of things, not strings. If the system is not confident what your company is, it will describe a competitor instead. That is the work in entity SEO and Organization schema.

5. Decide deliberately about the opt-out toggle

Alongside its generative AI performance report, Google began testing a Search Console toggle that blocks your content from AI Mode and AI Overviews. Sites that opt out receive no traffic and no impressions from those features. Google says it is not a ranking signal for core web search. What you can actually measure

Google’s generative AI performance report, which began rolling out in June 2026 to a subset of UK site owners, reports impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for AI Mode and AI Overviews. It does not report clicks, and Google has not committed to adding them. Bing Webmaster Tools shipped a comparable AI performance report earlier, global but likewise click-free.

AI Mode rewards depth over precision targeting. The queries that decide your visibility are largely invented on the fly and invisible to keyword research, so the winning move is comprehensive, well-structured coverage attached to an entity Google recognizes. Rank well enough to be retrieved, then be quotable enough to be chosen.
