GEOAI Search

What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

If SEO is how you get found on Google, GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is how you get found inside AI. As more people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews instead of scrolling a page of blue links, the question changes from “Do we rank?” to “Does the AI mention us?”

Why GEO exists

Traditional search returns a list of links and lets the user choose. Generative engines do something different: they read the web, synthesize an answer, and cite a short list of sources. If your brand isn’t in that answer, you’re invisible — no matter how well you rank on page one.

GEO is the discipline of making sure your brand is the one the model reaches for.

The three pillars of GEO

1. Be understood

Models represent the world as entities — people, companies, products, and the relationships between them. Clear, structured data (Schema.org markup, consistent naming, an unambiguous “who we are”) helps a model know exactly what your brand is and does.

2. Be quotable

AI engines prefer content that is concise, factual, and well-sourced. Answer-first formatting, clear definitions, and cited claims make your content easy to lift into a generated answer.

3. Be measured

You can’t improve what you don’t track. GEO includes monitoring how often — and how accurately — the major models mention your brand, then optimizing toward more and better citations.

GEO doesn’t replace SEO — it extends it

The good news: most of what makes GEO work also makes classic SEO work. A fast, well-structured, authoritative site is the foundation for both. The difference is intent: with GEO, you’re optimizing not just for a ranking algorithm, but for a model that has to decide whether to quote you.

The brands that win the next decade of search will be the ones AI trusts enough to cite.
