Google Search Console Setup Checklist
For site owners and SEOs who are adding a new site to Search Console or inheriting one with unclear access. Work through it once at setup, then again after any domain, protocol or CMS change.
- critical
Why and how
- Why it matters
- A URL-prefix property only sees one protocol and host, so data for www, non-www, http or subdomains goes missing.
- How to check or fix it
- In Search Console choose Add property, pick Domain, and enter the bare domain. Verify with the DNS TXT record at your registrar.
- critical
Why and how
- Why it matters
- If verification depends on a theme file or a plugin, a redesign can silently remove it and lock you out of the data.
- How to check or fix it
- Prefer DNS verification. Keep any backup method (HTML file or tag) in place and list it under Settings > Ownership verification.
- important
Why and how
- Why it matters
- When one person leaves or loses their account, the whole property can become unreachable.
- How to check or fix it
- Go to Settings > Users and permissions and add a second owner from a company-controlled address.
- critical
Why and how
- Why it matters
- A submitted sitemap gives Google a clean list of canonical URLs and surfaces fetch or parsing errors early.
- How to check or fix it
- Open Indexing > Sitemaps, enter the sitemap URL, and submit. Check that Status is Success and the discovered URL count is plausible.
- important
Why and how
- Why it matters
- This report is the fastest way to find noindex tags, soft 404s or blocked pages that you did not intend.
- How to check or fix it
- Open Indexing > Pages, click each reason listed, and review the example URLs against what you meant to publish.
- important
Why and how
- Why it matters
- It shows whether Google can fetch and render the page and which canonical it selected.
- How to check or fix it
- Paste the homepage URL in the top bar, then use Test live URL and View tested page to compare the rendered HTML and screenshot.
- important
Why and how
- Why it matters
- Manual actions, security issues and indexing spikes are only flagged by email or inside the interface.
- How to check or fix it
- Check Settings > Notifications in your Google account and confirm the owner address is monitored by a real person.
- important
Why and how
- Why it matters
- An inherited property may already carry a penalty or hacked-content warning that explains weak performance.
- How to check or fix it
- Open Security & Manual Actions and read both Manual actions and Security issues. Both should say No issues detected.
- nice
Why and how
- Why it matters
- The link lets GA4 show query and landing page data next to engagement and conversion data.
- How to check or fix it
- In GA4 go to Admin > Product links > Search Console links and select the verified property. Then publish the Search Console collection in the reports.
- nice
Why and how
- Why it matters
- Without a recorded baseline you cannot tell later whether changes helped.
- How to check or fix it
- Set the range to the last 16 months, note clicks, impressions and average position, and export the Queries and Pages tabs.
- nice
Why and how
- Why it matters
- The interface keeps about 16 months of data, so older history is lost unless you store it.
- How to check or fix it
- Enable the bulk data export to BigQuery under Settings > Bulk data export, or schedule a monthly manual export of the Performance report.

Common questions
Should I use a Domain property or a URL-prefix property?
A Domain property is usually the better default because it combines every protocol and subdomain in one view. It requires DNS verification. Use a URL-prefix property when you can only edit the site files or need to limit data to one section.
How long does it take for Search Console data to appear?
Performance data usually starts appearing within a couple of days of verification, but it is not backfilled to before you verified for a URL-prefix property in many cases. Index status can take longer for new sites.
