Link Building Checklist
For SEOs and site owners starting or restarting a link building program. Use it before outreach begins to pick targets and assets, and again each quarter to review what is working and what is putting the site at risk.

Why and how
- Why it matters
- Links sent to pages that cannot rank or convert waste effort. Focus keeps the campaign measurable.
- How to check or fix it
- List 5-10 pages tied to revenue or leads. In Search Console, check Performance for pages sitting on positions 4-20 that a few links could lift.
- critical
Why and how
- Why it matters
- Without a baseline you cannot show what the campaign changed.
- How to check or fix it
- Export referring domains per URL from Ahrefs or Semrush and save the date with the file.
- critical
Why and how
- Why it matters
- Editors link to pages that add something to their own content, such as data, tools or clear explanations. Pages with no reason to be cited do not earn links.
- How to check or fix it
- For each page, write one sentence naming the specific asset (original data, calculator, template, definitive guide) that justifies a link.
- important
Why and how
- Why it matters
- Competitor link patterns show which formats the audience and editors reward.
- How to check or fix it
- In Ahrefs Site Explorer, open Best by links for three competitors and note recurring formats and topics.
- important
Why and how
- Why it matters
- A link from a relevant, real publication carries more value than many links from unrelated sites.
- How to check or fix it
- Score each prospect on topical fit, real traffic, and whether the site publishes original editorial content. Drop sites that sell links openly.
- important
Why and how
- Why it matters
- Generic inbox emails get ignored, and mass mail merges are easy to spot.
- How to check or fix it
- Use the site's author pages or team page and LinkedIn. Record the editor or writer who covers the topic.
- important
Why and how
- Why it matters
- Busy editors decide in seconds. Long pitches about your site get deleted.
- How to check or fix it
- Open with the specific article you read, say what you can add, and link the asset. Test each template on 10 sends before scaling.
- critical
Why and how
- Why it matters
- Google's spam policies treat paid links that pass ranking credit as link spam, which can lead to links being ignored or a manual action.
- How to check or fix it
- Require rel="sponsored" on any paid placement. Review vendor contracts and remove any guaranteed-dofollow clauses.
- important
Why and how
- Why it matters
- Repeated exact-match commercial anchors look manipulated and can trigger link spam systems.
- How to check or fix it
- Do not request specific anchors from editors. Review the anchor distribution in Ahrefs under Anchors and flag any exact-match pattern.
- important
Why and how
- Why it matters
- Links disappear when pages are removed or edited. Reclaiming a lost link is cheaper than earning a new one.
- How to check or fix it
- Use the New and Lost backlinks reports in Ahrefs or Semrush and email the site owner about links that were removed by mistake.
- nice
Why and how
- Why it matters
- Links are a means, not the goal. Reporting only link counts hides whether the work paid off.
- How to check or fix it
- In Search Console, compare clicks and average position for each target page before and after links landed, allowing several weeks for effects.
- nice
Why and how
- Why it matters
- Tactics have uneven returns. Without review, hours keep going into methods that do not produce links.
- How to check or fix it
- Tally links earned per tactic and hours spent. Keep the top two and test one new method.

Common questions
How many backlinks do I need to rank?
There is no fixed number. Look at the referring domains of pages currently ranking for your target query and compare their quality, then aim to match the relevance and strength rather than a count.
Is link building against Google's guidelines?
Earning links through useful content and real outreach is fine. Buying links that pass ranking credit, link exchanges at scale and automated link schemes are against Google's spam policies.
